Domeikava gymnasium
Domeikava gymnasium is situated on the outskirts of Kaunas, the second largest city of Lithuania. The history of the school started 100 years ago, when the first primary school in the territory of Domeikava was opened in 1920’s. Nowadays the school provides primary, basic and secondary education services.
The number of students has been increasing in the last years and the school year 2020 started with 1016 students in Domeikava Gymnasium (89 primary pupils at the Uzliedziai primary school, which is a department of Domeikava gymnasium). Over 80 teachers and student support specialists work at the school.
Our vision is a modern, learning, open for changes and challenges, cherishing traditions and values community. Our goal is to provide conditions for pupils‘ successful personal development and life in the community, foster and disseminate ethno-cultural values.
The focus of the gymnasium is on positive communication and high academic performance. The community feel positive about the achievements of our junior and senior students in the regional and national contests of Natural and Social Sciences, Brain battles, Languages, Arts and Crafts competitions.
The school is unique and famous for the folk group “Serbentele“ consisting of 80 pupils, whose age range from 7 to 19 years old. The group was established in 1997 and since then has participated in numerous regional, national and international contests and has been awarded as the best children folk group in Lithuiania. Ethnic culture is taught as a subject in the 5th, 6th and 7th grades.
The school also offers a variety of extra curriculum activities to suit everybody‘s interests and talents. A large number of sports, art and music clubs are available for junior and senior students. Teams of students are also involved in long lasting national projects taking place at school, volunteering and charity actions.
The families of the students belong to different socio-economic backgrounds, ….of the students receive social support and free lunch. The school practises inclusive education and in 2020 - 2021, 50 students with special needs and 15 students from re-emigrated families study at the gymnasium.
The teachers creatively implement educational content, therefore organizing lessons in the non-traditional classrooms have become a common practice. The pedagogical community also actively participate in sharing good practices with teachers from other schools that is seen as a very valuable experience for the school staff.
Since 2004 gymnasium has been an active participant of EU funded projects. Both teachers and students participate in national and international projects and training events. For the children communicating with peers from other countries is eye-opening. The international project activities highly contribute to increasing students’ motivation, using modern technologies and strengthening personal confidence and self-esteem.
